► Extended thermodynamics of irreversible processes is developed on the basis of two postulates which complement each other. ► A more general linear approximation of the entropy production is derived. ► The constitutive dual-phase-lag equations and equations of the conventional version of EIT are obtained. ► The entropy changes strictly monotonically with time by the presented theory.
