A theoretical model for uni-directional ant trails

► A cellular automata model of an ant trail has been studied. ► Two different types of ant are considered: smelling well and poor. ► The mean velocity of the ants varies nonmonotonically with density. ► The flux and mean velocity shows a transition at some densities. ► The model can be generalized for vehicular traffic on freeways.
