Analysis of inverse stochastic resonance and the long-term firing of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons with Gaussian white noise

► Inverse stochastic resonance is a recently discovered phenomenon. ► It involves inhibition of repetitive spiking in neurons. ► The mechanisms have not been understood. ► Long term simulations of duration 500,000 ms are performed. ► We explore the statistical properties of the random variables involved and a general scheme is given.
