Microwave sintering of Al2(1−x)MgxTi(1+x)O5 ceramics obtained from mixture of nano-sized oxide powders

In the present work, the microwave sintering of Al2(1−x)MgxTi(1+x)O5 ceramics from Al2O3, TiO2 and MgO (0, 2, 5 and 7 wt%) nanopowders has been studied. Phase transformations proceeded during sintering at different temperatures (1250°, 1350° and 1400 °C). For x=0.5 sample, the maximum value of strength was measured about 60 MPa. Samples containing MgO showed enhanced thermal stability at 1100 °C even after annealing for 100 h. Tialite was formed at relatively low temperature of 1280 °C and achieved fine-grained microstructure. Furthermore, the addition of MgO reduced the formation temperature of tialite and strongly influenced the microstructure.
