On the grain boundary grooving in thin filaments

The process of grain boundary grooving in thin filaments with bamboo microstructure is considered. A criterion for filament break-up is obtained. It is shown that original Mullins' theory of grain boundary grooving considerably overestimates thermal stability of thin filaments.
