Nanoindentation of hard multilayer coatings: Finite element modelling

▶ Stress distribution in multilayer coatings under nanoindentation is visualised. ▶ Both radial tensile and shear stress are greatly reduced. ▶ The area of radial tensile stress beneath indentation contact edge is reduced. ▶ The probability of both ring and lateral cracking is significantly decreased.
