► AFM is a powerful tool for visualizing virus structure. ► Marine viruses provide a new wealth of novel virus structures. ► This study reveals several forms of cyanophage: tailed, filamentous, spherical, rod shaped, eccentric. ► New structural features unknown in terrestrial viruses were observed.
