Laser cycling and thermal cycling exposure of thermal barrier coatings on copper substrates

► Thermal barrier coatings on copper were investigated by thermal and laser cycling. ► Failure mechanisms are different compared to TBCs on Ni-substrates. ► Failure during laser cycling exposure was observed at the substrate/BC interface. ► Laser cycling proves to be a suitable method of testing TBCs under thermal gradient.
