Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for contamination removal on engine-run thermal barrier coatings

► Contaminant oxides were removed by laser ablation from thermal barrier coatings. ► LIBS was used to control laser ablation depth and preserve underlying TBC. ► Ablation and LIBS technique enable use of PLPS for coating life prediction. ► Repeatable and useful PLPS signals obtained from ablated areas.
