Pharmacological prevention and treatment of vascular dementia: Approaches and perspectives

► Vascular dementia (VaD) is a significant clinical problem for which there is no treatment. ► Pharmaceuticals that prevent strokes or treat Alzheimer's Dementia offer limited benefits for VaD. ► Only antihypertensive compounds, if started early, reduce VaD incidence and slow progression. ► Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors may improve cognition but have significant side effects.
