► Tarsal-less (tal) is required non-autonomously for the formation of the tarsal joints. ► N signalling activates the expression of tal in tarsus. ► Tal peptides regulate the formation of N signalling boundaries by repression of Dl. ► Repression of Dl is achieved by the Tal-mediated activation of Shavenbaby.
