► Alstonine is an alkaloid with anxiolytic and antipsychotic-like properties. ► Alstonine and clozapine reduced glutamate uptake in acute hippocampal slices. ► 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptor antagonists abolished alstonine's effect. ► Only alstonine increased glutathione intracellular levels.
