• Bulk-sized single crystals of l-threonine (I) and l-prolinium tartrate (II) were grown for the first time.
• UV–vis–NIR spectra showed the excellent transparency in this region.
• The values of the SHG conversion efficiencies of (I) and (II) are about 184% and 95%, respectively, compared to KDP.
• The low values of the dielectric loss in the region of high frequency imply that these crystals have lesser defects.
• The above results show that these crystals may have possible applications for frequency conversion.
Single crystals of the organic non-linear optical materials l-threonine (I) and l-prolinium tartrate (II) were grown using a home-made crystal growth setup (MKN setup). The grown crystals were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Infrared (IR), UV–vis–NIR and Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Measurements of Vicker’s microhardness, laser damage threshold (LDT) values and second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies are reported. Thermal and dielectric studies were also carried out.
