Squarylium-based chromogenic anion sensors

► A squarylium dye chemosensor was synthesized. ► The dye chemosensor exhibited high selectivity for CN− in acetonitrile. ► The dye chemosensor also displayed marked color changes when used as a detector for ethylamine gas.
