Magnetization tunneling in high-symmetry Mn12 single-molecule magnets

This review has been adapted from a talk given by the author at the Third Workshop on Current Trends in Molecular and Nanoscale Magnetism, organized by George Christou in Orlando, Florida, June 2010. A very basic introduction to the theory of resonant quantum tunneling in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is first given, followed by a short discussion of the Mn12-acetate single-molecule magnet (SMM) and the solvent disorder that is known to perturb the intrinsic magnetization tunneling behavior observed in this compound. The remainder of the review focuses on key developments resulting from the preparation of several high-symmetry, spin S = 10 Mn12 clusters by the Christou group that do not suffer problems associated with disorder to the same extent as the original Mn12-acetate. Studies of these newer/cleaner Mn12’s have thus contributed significantly to our current understanding of resonant magnetization tunneling in molecular nanomagnets. This review is intended for both chemists and physicists, particularly junior researchers who are just starting work in the field.
