A new phenolic compound, broussonone A (1) were isolated from the stem barks of Broussonetia kanzinoki (Moraceae), together with two diphenylpropanes, broussonin A (2), broussonin B (3), two flavans, 7,4′-dihydroxyflavan (4), 3′,7-dihydroxy-4′-methoxyflavan (5), and two flavones, 3,7-dihydroxy-4′-methoxyflavone (6), 3,7,3′-trihydroxy-4′-methoxyflavone (7). Compound 1 showed noncompetitive inhibitory activity on pancreatic lipase with an IC50 of 28.4 μM. In addition, compounds 1–5 significantly inhibited adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells as measured fat accumulation using Oil Red O assay.
