• We offered the PCL/zein composite as an organized design coating for BG scaffolds.
• Our results propose a novel type of drug controlled-release composite scaffolds.
• The mechanical stability of BG scaffold was increased via coating by PCL and zein.
• They are promising candidates for in-situ drug release in bone tissue engineering.
