Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles were prepared simply in the presence of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Mixing sequence of ion precursors during the synthesis of HA greatly affected the morphological structure of nanoparticles. Ca–P showed only the sphere-like structure, however P–Ca exhibited the mixture of spherical and rod-like nanoparticles. The size of nanoparticles slightly decreased with increasing the content of β-CD. The HAs synthesized in the presence of β-CD agglomerated, leading to the formation of aggregates with a size of hundreds nanometer and narrow size distribution. FT-IR, XRD and XRF analyses confirmed that the HA nanoparticles could be synthesized with using β-CD, in which the Ca/P molar ratio was ranged from 1.72 to 1.70. The crystalline phase of these HA nanoparticles was similar to that of the stoichiometric HA. In addition, the content of β-CD contained in the products could influence the initial deposition rate of bone-like apatite on the surface of HA nanoparticles in simulated body fluid (SBF).
