In the present study, the properties of the aluminum surface after its anodic polarization in tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate acetonitrile solution are investigated. The film formed on the aluminum anode is composed of a complex compound of oxyfluorides and hydroxyborates. It is revealed that the impurities of water in electrolyte solution catalyze the process of film formation and promotes the decay of electrolyte constituents. The formal multiphase mechanism of such processes on the electrodes and in near-electrode electrolyte layers is proposed.
► The key compounds formed on the aluminum anode surface are oxyfluorides and hydroborates.
► The corrosion contact resistance of anode revealed a 1.5-fold increase.
► The putative mechanism of the processes at the electrodes and in near-electrode layers is proposed.
