Oxide layers formed on the surface of 216L stainless steel (SS) in lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) liquid were analyzed and compared with oxides on 316L SS. Corrosion experiments were conducted in static LBE at different temperatures with controlled dissolved oxygen concentration of 10−6 wt.%. On 216L SS, at 500 °C after 1000 h there was formation of thin oxide layer consisting of Cr, while at 550 °C after 1000 h the oxide scale appeared to be thick layer, enriched with mainly Mn and Cr-oxides. XPS analysis revealed the presence of Mn in multiple ionic states in oxide scale formed on SS 216L in LBE.
► 216L SS is explored into lead bismuth eutectic for advanced fast breeder reactors.
► Oxide layers formed on 216L SS in LBE were compared with oxides on type 316L SS.
► Replacement of Mn with Ni in 316L SS makes little difference in oxide formation.
