The acid resistance of fracturing proppant can be effectively improved by adding BaCO3 and reducing SiO2. An acid-resistant proppant was created in a BaO–CaO–P2O5–Al2O3 system without SiO2 to increase the proppant’s acid resistance. The effects of corrosion on the properties and microstructure of the proppant were investigated using a hydrofluoric–hydrochloric acid mixture (12 wt.% HCl + 3 wt.% HF). The morphology, structure, and phase analysis of several samples were investigated using SEM and XRD. The results show that in a BaO–CaO–P2O5–Al2O3 system this proppant has good acid resistance. The corrosion resistance mechanism of this ceramic material is also discussed.
► Acid corrosion behavior of ceramic proppant was evaluated in BCPA system.
► Acid resistance can be improved by control of phase formed in BCPA system.
► The corrosion layer protected proppant from acid corrosion in BCPA system.
► “BCPA” is an abbreviation for of BaO–CaO–P2O5–Al2O3.
