• Sr2Mg(BO3)2 doped Gd3+ and Pr3+ have been synthesized by solution combustion synthesis technique.
• Effect of doping concentration of Gd3+ and Pr3+ on the luminescence of synthesized material is discussed.
• Effect of charge compensation by Li+, Na+ and K+ on emission intensity is studied in detail.
• Efficient energy transfer from Pr3+ to Gd3+ in Sr2Mg(BO3)2 was observed.
• Optimum concentration and critical transfer distance for optimum concentration have been determined.

The photoluminescence properties of (Sr1−xPrx)2Mg(BO3)2; (Sr1−2xPrxMx)2Mg(BO3)2, (M = Li, Na, K); (Sr1−xGdx)2Mg(BO3)2; (Sr1−2xGdxMx)2Mg(BO3)2, (M = Li, Na, K) and (Sr1−4xPrxGdxNa2x)2Mg(BO3)2 inorganic phosphors prepared by solution combustion synthesis technique are discussed. The structure of the prepared phosphor characterized using Thermogravimetric–differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform-infrared. Scanning electron microscopy images of the prepared materials show irregular grains with agglomerate phenomena. Photoluminescence properties were studied at room temperature. Optimum concentration and critical transfer distance of the synthesized phosphors were determined.
