Monte Carlo simulations were used for modeling of optical transmission in twisted nematic liquid crystals containing metal nanoparticles interacting resonantly with pump polarized laser light. This method allows for tuning of the interaction strength: light-nanoparticle (parameter τ), anchoring at the surface (parameter α) and gives profile of angular molecular distribution within the LC layer thickness. We supplemented this method by a classic description of the optical Kerr effect in the TNLC between crossed polarizer system and compare results of transmittance changes of the system with measurements.
► Twisted nematic liquid crystal cell shows all-optical switching.
► Analytical model and Monte Carlo simulations show good agreement with experiment.
► Anomalous behavior and change of phase of optical Kerr signal was explained.
► All-optical switching can be controlled by dopants: dyes and nanoparticles.
