Laser dye Rhodamine 6G incorporated into Zirconia-Glymo (Glymo-3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) glasses obtained by sol–gel method shows increased luminescence in presence of silver nanoparticles (NPs). The mechanism of the increase was studied by continuous and dynamical fluorescence. The intensity enhancement of fluorescence by 225% was obtained in glasses co-doped with silver NPs. The experimental results allow concluding that the increase of fluorescence is mainly due to the interaction of the dye molecules with the scattering of silver plasmons.

► Were studied the fluorescence of Rhodamine 6G in Zirconia-Glymo films.
► Enhancement of fluorescence by 225% was obtained in glasses co-doped with AgNPs.
► Intensity of emission increase with no change of the emission lifetime.
► Fluorescence enhancement in this system is due to scattering of SP excited electrons..
