Ductile fracture evaluated through micro-computed X-ray tomography

Micro-computed X-ray tomography, a non-destructive three-dimensional imaging technique, is applied to characterize secondary particles in 5083 Al specimens with varying stress states. The tomography-measured particle geometry, distribution and void behavior are used to identify the controlling ductile fracture mechanisms. These measurements become inputs for models predicting strain to failure.
