Cylindrical domain formation in topologically complex structures

The morphological evolution of topologically complex structures is studied during isothermal coarsening. Three-dimensional reconstructions and interfacial shape distributions are used to analyze the topological changes that occur during coarsening. A prevalent feature of the microstructures for long coarsening times are cylinders or cylindrical-like interfacial shapes and not interfacial-energy-minimizing spherical shapes.
