Glasses from xMnO·(100 − x)[3B2O3·0.5PbO·0.5Ag2O] (0 ≤ x ≤ 20 mol%) system were prepared and studied by means of two spectroscopic techniques: FT-IR absorption and Raman scattering. We interpreted the spectroscopic data in conjunction with the structural information obtained by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns have showed homogenous glasses over the entire compositional range. The FT-IR data propose for these glasses network structures mainly built by: di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- and ortho-borate groups. It was found that the quantitative evolution of these various borate species in the glass structures is influenced by the MnO concentration. A detailed discussion relating to the NBO4/NBO3NBO4/NBO3 ratio evolution with the manganese ions' (x) content was made. The Raman data is in agreement with the FT-IR results and complete information about these glasses detecting new structural groups as pyro-, ditri- and dipenta-borate groups.
