A well-crystalline BaWO4 film has been prepared on a tungsten substrate in an alkaline solution containing barium ions through a simple chemical reaction method at room temperature via the reaction between Ba2+ and WO42−. The acceleration of the oxidation/dissolution of the tungsten substrate to form WO42− with an oxidizing agent, H2O2, seems to be the key to the success. Prismatic crystals of a typical grain size of about 8 μm were grown to the thickness of about 10–20 μm after the 2–3 hour treatment. The effect of solution pH, concentration of Ba2+ ions and H2O2 on the formation of BaWO4 crystals were studied in detail with reaction mechanism.
