Characterization of surface films formed on molten magnesium in atmospheres containing SO2

► We found the film formed on molten Mg mainly consisted of MgO, MgS and MgSO4. ► Thickness and composition of film varied with SO2 content, time and temperature. ► We found the growth of the film was affected by the formation of MgSO4.
