• A new class of partially coherent sources with special coherence properties is introduced.
• The far fields produced by this new source carry ring-shaped optical lattice profile.
• The number of rings and lattice units can be controlled flexibly by the source parameter.

A new class of planar and quasi-homogeneous Schell-model sources for producing far fields with ring-shaped optical lattice is introduced. We derived the beam conditions for such sources and investigate the spectral density behaviors of the beam generated by this new-type source. It is shown that the far field distribution of the spectral density takes on radial Gaussian array profile. The number of rings depends on the value of parameter N. We also find that the spectral densities appear as closed ring-shaped distribution rather than the radial array profile when the value of parameter M is sufficiently large.
