The point spread functions (PSFs) of digital image-plane holographic microscopy (DIPHM) and digital holographic microscopy (DHM) are deduced. It can be known from PSFs that the lateral resolution of DIPHM is determined by the numerical aperture of the microscopic objective and the pixel size of CCD, and is independent of the size of CCD sensor, which is quite different in DHM. By comparing the PSFs of DIPHM with spherical and plane reference waves, it is known that the spherical reference wave is preferred in DIPHM setup. The corresponding experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical analysis. It is testified from both experimental results and theoretical analysis that DIPHM is an optimization holographic imaging technique, which can yield high-quality imaging.
