A holographic tandem method is proposed for creating double-holograms to diffract a central symmetric laser beam into a beam with arbitrary intensity distribution. The performance of the method is quantitatively evaluated using diffraction efficiency (DE) and root mean square error (RMSE). Simulation results indicate that more than 92% of the incident laser energy is concentrated into the predicted intensity distribution within the desired region. And the reconstructed intensity distribution agrees well with the target distribution with a fractional error at the percent level. The technique proposed in this paper provides not only a promising convenient beam shaping for laser fusion and laser precision machining but also a potential path to generate arbitrary intensity distribution for atom traps and optical image.
