Legendre transformation: Connection between transverse aberration of an optical system and its caustic

A geometrical theory of aberration has been developed, using caustic surfaces. This theory is based upon the properties of the Legendre transformation, which connects the caustic surface with the transverse aberration of the optical system in the meridional plane.
