Transverse mode selection in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser by using preferential alignment of optical feedback

Effect of the alignment of optical feedback on a multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is investigated experimentally. Enhancement of the fundamental mode or higher-order mode is achieved by adjusting the alignment of the feedback mirror. When the strength of feedback is strong enough, single-transverse-mode operation is obtained in a wide current range.
