Temperature dependence of bending loss in single mode communication fiber: Effect of fiber buffer coating

This paper reports the bend induced optical loss in a buffered single mode fiber has been measured as an oscillatory function of temperature. The experimental observations are explained based on interference between the core-guided modes and whispering gallery modes formed by the reflection at the buffer–air interface. The observed results are consistent with the optothermal properties of the fiber and buffer. The experimental results are in agreement for smaller bend radius and inconsistent for higher bend radius.
