Influence of overloading on fatigue durability and stability of residual stresses in shot peened normalized steel

► The effect of single cycle of overload on fatigue durability of shot peened steel was studied. ► The stability and relaxation of the residual stresses were investigated. ► The results were compared with constant amplitude test data. ► One cycle of overloading can reduce the fatigue life time by 25-60%. ► The influence of sequence and loading direction shown to be very pronounced.
