Chromatophores and color revelation in the blue variant of the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens)

► We investigated ultrastructural features of chromatophores in the Betta splenden. ► The fish display blue coloration via a multilayer interference system. ► The system appears to be under the influence of the sympathetic nervous system.
