In situ synthesis of FeSi particle toughening Si3N4 composite

► FeSi was in situ synthesized to prepare FeSi/Si3N4 composites. ► Addition of Fe3Al promoted sintering and improved fracture toughness. ► The toughening mechanism of FeSi was discussed. ► This opens new possibilities for in situ toughening of Si3N4 ceramic.
