• Al/Ti-based glassy composite is obtained by a novel cold consolidated method.
• A large size bulk sample is fabricated using powder metallurgy route.
• The consolidated bulk samples have high strength and improved plasticity.
• The samples fabricated by sintering exhibit strong wear resistance.
• Al/Ti-based glassy composite may have applications under different conditions.
Al-based amorphous matrix composites enhanced with Ti-based glassy particles are fabricated using a cold hydro-mechanical pressing (CHMP) technique. The compacted glassy/crystalline microstructure and strong interface bonding caused by severe deformed densification of Al-based powders are responsible for high fracture strength and improved plasticity of composites. Furthermore the Al-based composite is also produced by high temperature sintering, which exhibits strong wear resistance during sliding. The Al/Ti-based amorphous composites prepared by powder metallurgy could exhibit various properties, which may have potential engineering application under different conditions.
