Coaxial growth of carbon coated MoS2 nanoparticles on carbon nanotube and their electrochemical evaluation

MoS2 nanoparticles and amorphous carbon were anchored on multi-walled carbon nanotubes by a one step hydrothermal method. The carbon-CNT-MoS2 composite possesses a coaxial structure and it was investigated as an electrode material in lithium battery. The composite exhibits excellent cyclic stability compared to pristine MoS2. At a current density of 100 mA g−1, the carbon-CNT-MoS2 composite retains a discharge capacity of 522 mA h g−1 with 98% columbic efficiency at the 50th cycle. Pristine MoS2 and CNT-MoS2 composite show negligible discharge capacity at 50th cycle. The improved electrochemical activity of carbon-CNT-MoS2 composite is attributed to the unique coaxial architecture and nanostructuring of MoS2.
