• A novel electrochemical supercapacitor, which Li4Ti5O12 is used as a negative electrode and AC mixed with 10% LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 is used as a positive electrode, has been prepared.
• This supercapacitor shows a specific capacitance of 178.6 F g−1 at 80 mA g−1 and maintained 92.5% specific capacitance value after 50 cycles.
• Similar approach as described in the present work, which combines Li4Ti5O12 and AC mixed with LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 as electrodes, could be extended to other hybrid supercapacitors that consist of lithium-ion battery materials such as LiMn2O4, LiCoO2, LiFePO4, LiV2O5, LiV3O8, and LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2.
Li4Ti5O12 and LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 electrode materials were prepared by solid state reaction. The structures and morphologies of these electrode materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical properties of the samples were investigated by cyclic voltammograms and charge–discharge tests. Among the composition explored, the electrochemical supercapacitor, which contained active carbon (AC) mixed with 10% LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 and Li4Ti5O12, achieved the best specific capacitance of 178.6 F g−1 at 80 mA g−1 and maintained 92.5% specific capacitance value after 50 cycles.

Furthermore, the electrochemical supercapacitor described in the present work, which combines Li4Ti5O12 and AC compounded with LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, could be extended to other hybrid supercapacitors that consist of lithium-ion battery materials (LiMn2O4, LiCoO2, LiFePO4, LiV2O5, LiV3O8, LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, etc.) and AC electrodes.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
