A novel and simple room temperature one-step, solid-state route in the presence of a suitable nonionic surfactant, PEG 400, has been described to synthesize CdS nanorods with diameters of approximately 20–80 nm and lengths of 100–400 nm. The CdS nanorods were characterized by XRD, TEM, SAED and XPS. The role of nonionic surfactant, PEG 400, in the formation of CdS nanorods has been discussed. The results indicated that the surfactant, PEG 400, played a key role for the formation of CdS nanorods. This new route requires neither complex apparatus and reagents nor sophisticated techniques and templates. The experiments can be carried out at room temperature.
