There are a number of factors that affect the pitting corrosion rate of stainless alloy with time being the definitive factor. Other factors such as environmental conditions and material properties cannot be controlled accurately. The trend prediction of pitting corrosion is usually based on a long-term experimentation process that requires large amounts of resources i.e. manpower, time and material and is dominated by the data collection activity. Due to the human factor and the uncontrollable sea condition factors in environmental test, it is possible to make errors during the experimentation period. In such a system grey theory is suitably utilized to predict the tendency of pitting corrosion behavior of stainless alloy used onboard ships.
