Efficiently tailoring the pore diameter of mesoporous MCM-48 to micropore

An efficient tailoring of the pore-opening size from mesoporous MCM-48 (27.7 Å) to microporous solid (6–8 Å) has been conducted through the post-synthesis modification of mesoporous MCM-48. The tailored solid material is totally different from the parent MCM-48 in the nitrogen adsorption behavior, but still possesses the X-ray diffraction characteristics of MCM-48 framework. Thermal analyses suggest relatively thermal stability of the resulting solid material. BET data and saturated sorption capacities of various solid materials for toluene, mesitylene, and water suggest that the pore volume of tailored microporous solid is similar to that of NaY, largely smaller than that of the parent MCM-48, but obviously larger than that of ZSM-5.
