Plasma electrolytic oxidation and corrosion protection of Zircaloy-4

► PEO coatings are formed on Zircaloy-4 using an AC regime. ► Coating microstructure and composition are determined for different coating times. ► Corrosion protection is assessed in hot nitric acid. ► The main protection is shown to be afforded by the barrier layer at the coating base.
