• A simple and “green” voltammetric sensor was developed based on thread.
• Threads were coated with different screen-printing pastes and used as electrodes.
• Coated threads were used directly without any complex pre-treatment procedures.
• The thread-based sensor was able to detect various electroactive compounds.
A simple, “green” and novel concept for fabricating a low-cost voltammetric sensor developed based on cellulose thread is described. The thread used is inexpensive, widely available and lightweight. The thread was coated with screen-printing pastes and used directly for the detection of different electro-active compounds without any pre-treatment procedures. The hydrophilic nature of the thread enables the transportation of fluids via capillary action. The applicability of the thread-based sensor to perform rapid qualitative/quantitative analyses demonstrates thread as a promising platform for possible incorporation into field-deployable disposable sensing devices.
