• Bovine heart cytochrome c was used successfully as biological electron mediator
• Electrochemical characterization was done using glucose as a model analyte
• The highest electrode response was observed in the presence of cytochrome c
• This system can be used as an illustration of the concept of ‘artificial’ biofilm

Bovine heart cytochrome c can serve as electron mediator between Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria immobilized in a sol–gel film and a glassy carbon electrode surface. Such system illustrates the concept of ‘artificial’ biofilm in which strategies suggested in natural biofilms to transfer electrons are mimicked.
