Experiments were carried out to optimize the performance of the neutron back-scattering (NBS) technique in landmine detection using an assembly consisting of three different layers placed above a 252Cf neuron source, producing about 104 s−1, in conjunction with a 3He detector. The assembly was optimized experimentally. The selected assembly configuration was then examined against different 252Cf stand-off distances and mine burial depths using dummy landmines. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations were performed to study the effect of the shield when a 252Cf source in the range 104–107 s−1 was employed, and to optimize the geometry for future prototypes.
► A suitable shielded (252Cf-3He ) assembly for landmine detection was developed.
► Experimental tests and MCNP simulations were performed for a 252Cf of (104-107)s-1.
► Experimental and MCNP results for 252Cf of 104s-1 supports the use of the shield.
► MCNP Results recommends 252Cf of 106s-1 for hand-held detection system.
