We present results for X-ray absorption in the vicinity of the manganese L23 edge of MnF2, MnO, metallic manganese and LaMnO3. We also present emission spectra that result when the 2p hole produced in absorption is filled by decay from the 3s and 3d shells. The results are compared with Hartree-Fock calculations for Mn2+ and Mn3+ ions in a spherically symmetric environment. We found very good agreement between the MnF2 absorption and emission spectra and the Mn2+ calculated spectra. The absorption spectra for the other compounds are a superposition of Mn2+ and Mn3+ absorption. Effects due to the chemical environment are found for 3sâ2p X-ray emission. The energy losses measured for 3dâ2p emission indicate that both MnF2 and MnO are Mn2+ compounds, and that LaMnO3 is a Mn3+ compound.
