Vitamin D3 in inflammatory airway disease and immunosuppression

The active form of Vitamin D, 1α,25-DihydroxyVitamin D3 [1,25-(OH)2D3] or VitD3 is a potent inhibitor of Th1-mediated immunity. Its capacity to inhibit Th2-mediated immune responses is not yet established with reports of both inhibition and enhancement of Th2 responses. Recent studies from in vitro culture, animal models and limited human clinical studies are reviewed in an attempt to reconcile these data and understand the therapeutic potential of VitD3 in allergic airway disease.
